           Guest Information Welcome Sheet

WELCOME

In order for you to better understand what we are all about, we are providing you with this information sheet.  This is yours to keep, and there is nothing to fill out here.  However, you will notice two other sheets being passed around at the beginning of the meeting.

PROCEDURES

One is a Guest Sign-Up Sheet.  You will need to fill this out so that we know you by name.  As a guest, you are entitled to visit two times.  After this, if you choose to become a member of W.O.H., membership dues are $15.00 a year.

The second sheet you will see is a Reading Sign-Up Sheet.  This sheet is used to note people who have material to read.  It asks for your name, title of piece, number of pages, spacing and if you read the last time.  The maximum number of pages allowed to read at one time is three pages single spaced or six pages double spaced.  “Read last time” refers to any material you may have read at the last meeting you attended.  This allows us to give everyone a fair chance to read.  If you miss a meeting, write “missed last meeting” and you will be one of the first to read.

WHEN YOU ARE CALLED UP TO READ, PLEASE HAVE COPIES FOR EVERYONE – 10-12 COPIES SHOULD SUFFICE.  IF YOU WISH TO SHARE YOUR WORK, RATHER THAN HAVING IT CRITIQUED, PLEASE SPECIFY BEFORE YOU READ. First time guests generally will not read at their first meeting.  This is to enable them to understand the process of our meeting, but don’t be afraid to ask questions.

MEETING FORMAT:

6:30 P.M.

MEETING STARTS AT 6:30 P.M.  Please try to be on time so as not to interrupt the meeting. If your schedule does not allow it, it is understandable, but please join us quietly.

6:30 – 6:50 P.M.

This is time for any club business (i.e. upcoming events, changes in meeting places, sharing of information from members such as handouts, any guest speaker, etc.)  The secretary will keep track of the meeting minutes, and will include such information in the monthly newsletter.

6:50 –  ?

This is the time for reading and critiquing our material.  Don’t be afraid to read your material; we have all been in the first-time reading seat, and we are all very aware of how intimidating it can be.  Remember, we are all fellow writers.

CRITIQUING:

We urge you to concentrate on the creative process, point out weak points, praise good points.  Grammar and spelling can be marked on the copy and handed to the writer later.  Constructive criticism is helpful and appreciated.

AUTHOR’S WORK:

We cannot tolerate the public reading of material that is sexually explicit, racially offensive, or that targets a specific ethnic or religious group for degradation.  If your work contains material of this nature, you may submit it to members who are willing to critique it in a private reading.

A LITTLE HISTORY:

The organization was founded in 1989 by Sharon Palmeri when a handful of writers from her Merrillville Adult Education Creative Writer’s Class started to informally meet at the Merrillville Branch of Lake County Library.  W.O.H. sponsored many events, such as workshops, children, teen and adult writers’ contests, published two literary magazines annually; one for adults and teens and the other for children.  (See W.O.H. history for more details.)  W.O.H. suspended its writer’s critique group in 1997 and concentrated on children’s writing.  In January 2001, the critique group re-organized (once again with a handful of writers from Palmeri’s Creative Writing Class) to the group you see here now.
